The Not So Good
Price. When you purchase a premium product, you should expect a premium price tag, and this chipper from Patriot is no different. Also, some models “say” they can chop branches up to 4-inches in diameter; Patriot claims theirs is realistically rated for 3 inches. That said, you probably won’t come across 4-inch branches often enough for that to be a deal breaker.
Again, we almost never see a unit that everybody agrees is far and above the rest; however this is one of those items. If you’re looking for top-quality and are a little more liberal with allocating money for your home improvement needs, then go for this one.
A very strong performer is evidenced by this Brand and this particular model. This Great Circle USA wood chipper comes with a very powerful recoil starting 7HP/ 212cc gas powered engine, with a top hopper for feeding small brush and twigs, along with a more than capable side chute, for feeding up to 3” branches. Super strong performer at this price.
- 7HP Heavy Duty 212cc Gas Powered
- 3:1 capable Multi-Function Wood Chipper Shredder
- 3″ max Wood Diameter Capacity
- 3 Years Warranty
- CARB Certified
The Not so Good
- Same complaint as nearly All woodchippers – “They don’t mulch leaves very well”
- Editor note: Use your mower to mulch grass and leaves, not a wood chipper.
- Packaging complaint, which at the time of this article Manuf. Claims to have improved
With a very powerful engine, a chute capable of chipping 3” branches, and much more affordable than the Patriot Model we rate #1, this model makes a very serious contender for Home Use wood chippers.
The Southland SCS2052:
Wouldn’t you know it, yet another wood chipper with a Briggs and Stratton motor on it has made the A list; I think the moral is, Briggs and Stratton, makes one heck of an engine. This chipper shredder can chop branches as large as 2.5-inches, and has a 10:1 run reduction ratio. And it’s 10-inch pneumatic wheels are perfect for lugging around on rough terrain without threatening to tip over on you.
- Briggs & Stratton Engine 2-way feed oversized funnel for easy chipping
- You can choose to use a tow hitch for those times you don’t feel like pulling it all the way across to the other side of your property
- The pneumatic wheels are a breath of fresh-air; most chippers use those thin plastic wheels
- 2-year warranty from the Southland
- Comes with a bushel bag for easy mulch bagging
The Not so Good
The pull start can be challenging to get going if you have below average strength, and the shredder can become clogged relatively quickly if you try and shove too much debris into the shredder. Another minor issue we noticed was that it doesn’t work as well as some other premium shredders when inserting curved branches.
I’m a simple guy really if a machine has plenty of power and I can count on it to turn on when I need it too; then I like the product. And that may be why I love the Southland SCS2052 as much as I do. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that say the Patriot has, but it works like a charm. And that means a lot.
If you’re looking for something lighter and less bulky, and you don’t have tons of debris to pick up, then you’re the right candidate for an electric chipper shredder. These are lightweight, machines, easy to maintain, and perfect for smaller yards. The Sun Joe CJ602 is by far one of our favorite electric models and is also rated as a Best Seller in our link below.
- 15-amp motor allows you to cut small branches with ease (up to 1.5-inches in diameter)
- Safety hopper has a locking mechanism to keep the machine from opening during the shredding process
- Makes perfect sized wood chips (wood chips are excellent for smoking meat)
- 2-year manufacturer warranty
- Budget-friendly price tag
- Engine runs quietly
The Not so Good
Some Customer reviews indicate The Sun Joe doesn’t mulch weeds or leaves very well, but instead turns them into messy clumps. Another issue we’ve noticed with this is how loud it can get. Although the engine runs quietly, the blades make a whole lot of noise when chopping branches. I’m also not fond of the smaller entry port, however since it’s made for smaller branches anyway, pace yourself as you feed the hopper and you should be fine.
Finding an electric shredder that can complete a job without needing to give it a break halfway into the project – isn’t as easy as it sounds. Especially, not one that is as inexpensive as the Sun Joe CJ602E. But somehow this little gem manages to do just that. Now it may not be as capable for mulching grass or leaves (but hey – that’s what your mower is for) and you’ll have to stick to fairly small branches. But it is great for bush clippings and other normal yard debris.
There is a lot to like with this Tazz model, and the Viper engine (with a 5-year warranty) is only the first thing you’ll love about it. It also comes with a vacuum kit that you can use to skip the bagging process entirely. Well, maybe not entirely, you’ll still have to dump the vacuumed debris into a garden back, but you get the picture. Far and away the best value Chipper, without the Briggs & Stratton engine, but hey with a 5-year warranty there isn’t much to worry about?
- Powerful Viper engine with roughly 4hp
- Easily handles branches, leaves, and weeds
- Utilizes 11-inch ‘always ready’ wheels so you’ll never have to worry about a flat tire
- Debris bag lets you skip the worst part of the bagging process – never bend over to pick up the leaves again
- Easy start engine is super easy to start
- Eats through 3-inch branches with ease
- Makes fast work out of mulching and shredding
- 5-year warranty on the engine
It seems that if you are looking for the best value, then the Earthquake 30520 Compact shredder is one of the best options available to you. They have done an excellent job at putting together a quality machine without forcing you to pay a thousand plus for it.
The Not so Good
The wheels are oversized and make for easy rolling, but they are so thin that the machine likes to tip over while you’re moving it. Some fatter wheels could help this product a lot. Other than that, and the sheer weight of this wood chipper (121 pounds), there is very little to complain about.
4hp Engine is a little undersized compared to more expensive models with 7HP.
If you’re looking for an item that gives you great value, for around the price of middle to a high-tier product, then you really can’t go wrong with this one. It has plenty of power, that is sufficient for nearly every homeowner. And best of all, it’s durable as heck. Oh, and even if it does break down, Tazz Chipper Shredders is renowned for customer service and living up to their warranty.
With all of the benefits having a house surrounded by trees (like up to 50% savings on energy costs per year), it’s easy to see why so many people love having trees surrounding their properties. Not only does it save on energy, but trees provide a natural sound barrier between you and the noises outside your property, as well as countless other benefits.
But anyone who has seen a yard surrounded by these mighty oxygen dispensers can attest to the mess they can also make during the year. Which is why we’ve taken the time to research the best wood chipper shredder for residential use, so let’s go over some things to consider before deciding to purchase one.
Our 7 Top Considerations – Before buying a Wood Chipper Shredder
1) How Often Will You Use it
Here at Besthomegear.com, we want to ensure you get the best value possible, and that doesn’t always mean purchasing an item outright. If you’re only going to be using these once a year, or to clean up a mess that an unexpected storm left behind, then you probably would be better off renting one, rather than spending money on purchasing one.
But if you live in an area with high vegetation, trees and brush, then this may be a product worth owning permanently. Why? Because it does far more than just cut branches. You can use these incredibly powerful tools to shred grass, weeds, kitchen waste or other materials. The result is a super fine mulch that is easy to dispose of, or used as homemade compost. There are literally tons of things you can do with these machines.
2) Know How it Works
A wood chipper shredder utilizes a chute that you put branches in, once the wood hits the rotating blades it’s chopped into tiny chips that the shredder mechanism then shreds into fine mulch. Once that’s done, the mulch falls to the ground for easy clean-up. Some shredders utilize attachments for easy bagging of the mulch. Determine whether a mulching bag or vacuum accessory is important.
3) How to choose a chipper shredder
Like most lawn maintenance tools, the machine that is best for you depends mostly on your needs. Of course, you could always go for the best of the best if you want, but it’s likely that you could “outspend your needs”. We recommend you determine how often you’re going to use, how much of a workload you’re going to put on it, and of course, what is your budget.
You may even require a larger capacity, tow-behind model after reviewing our list..
To check out larger capacity models that accept up to 5” thick, click this link for the “Power King” tow behind, 15 hp. Wood chipper shredder. It’s a beast!
While the Power King is designed more for light commercial use it will of course be much more expensive than Home use models. However, If you have a large quantity of brush and a Large property (and budget) this may be just what you need.
4) Electric Chipper Shredders
The best electric wood chipper shredder is going to be much easier to tote around with you, and there will be a lot less maintenance involved with it. They aren’t made for large projects, with big branches to cut through. You should use these only for smaller clean-up jobs and stay away from saplings, roots, and thick branches.
Furthermore, you’ll have to have it attached to a power source which can severely hamper your ability to work in large spaces (especially if you don’t have a portable power generator). You should also be careful when purchasing an extension cord for these, as getting the wrong one can put unnecessary strain on the motor.
Tip: Check the manual that comes with it, it will have the type of extension cords you can safely use with the chipper.
5) Gasoline Shredders
When you need a large, and powerful machine for your wood chipping needs, then you have to go with a gas powered shredder. Their stronger engine allows them to chip and shred what seems to be an immeasurable amount of debris and keeps running for what looks like indefinitely.
However, they are far more cumbersome than electric shredders and can be a pretty big strain to haul around, as you move up to the larger models. The good news is since you’re looking for a residential shredder, you likely won’t be running into that problem.
6) Terms to Know
Before you purchase a wood chipper, there are some terms that you will want to get familiar with;
Horsepower – It’s no different than anything else with a motor, horsepower measures how much power the chipper shredder can deliver.
Reduction Ratio – One of the essential qualities in a shredder, is how much it can reduce the massive amounts of debris in your yard. For example, a 6:1 reduction ratio indicates that for every six bags of waste you have, the chipper can consolidate down to 1 bag. Tilt-down Hopper – These gadgets allow you to take your leave into the shredder directly. You want one with this capability
Capacity – the capacity indicates the largest size branch it can chip. The measurements will always be in diameter.
7) Electric Starter
Pull cords can be a hassle, and electric starting shredders eliminate the extra work of a pull cord.
