Runner Up: Troy-Bilt TB42

Troy-Bilt TB42 BC 27cc 2-Cycle Gas Brushcutter with JumpStart Technology

This model seems to a favorite among lawn maintenance consumers, and we can see why. First, it’s at a great value, and it’s not as if you are sacrificing a ton of power either. It has a 27cc 2-cycle engine utilizing jump start capability. What’s that mean for the user? It means that there is no cord pulling required to start the engine. Many professionals who use a brush cutter every day, would find this feature to be a big advantage as a commercial brush cutter.

The Good

  • This piece of equipment can accommodate up to 10 separate trimmer attachments, effectively eliminating the necessity to carry tools in your garage
  • A durable, and unbelievably strong 8-inch blade for cutting even the most robust brush
  • Spring-assist start means you never have to struggle with the pull cord
  • JumpStart tech allows you to use Troy-Bilt JumpStart system to bypass the pull string altogether
  • When you need power, this will provide it for you
  • Unbelievably versatile, you can apply it on almost anything

Most brush cutter reviews have offered this as one of the best brush cutters around, and it’s easy to see why. Versatile, powerful, dependable, and it provides plenty of bang for your buck.

While it’s true that the blade is durable, we had read some older reviews that claimed the blade wasn’t balanced as well as they expected. Once you get the cutter rolling at about half RPM, there was a noticeable wobble to the machine. The wobble did, however, go away once you reach higher RPM’s. Update – after checking recent reviews – Troy Bilt may have already fixed these issues.

The Verdict

I tend to enjoy products with enough versatility to allow me to get rid of some of my other tools. And that is a large part of the reason the Troy Bilt TB42 BC ranks so highly in my list of favorite brush cutters. With some minor tweaks to the shaft and an upgraded blade, this is now a fantastic brush cutter.

Most Underrated: Sun Seeker 52CC 2-in-1 Brush Cutter

Sunseeker BCI52 2-in-1 Straight Shaft Grass Trimmer and Brush Cutter

Sun Seeker isn’t one of the biggest names in lawn care, but that doesn’t mean they don’t put out excellent products. This 2-in-1 brush cutter is one of those unique products. It’s a lightweight product that harnesses a surprising amount of power, and the ergonomically designed bicycle grips with the body harness is a welcomed addition.

The Good

  • Power and longevity has been a common theme among several reviewers
  • One of the more comfortable brush cutters you will use. The bicycle handles do their jobs well
  • Includes a brush cutter blade and a string trimmer spool
  • A sturdy machine that allows you to attack heavy brush without fear of breaking it

The included harness isn’t nearly as comfortable one would like it to be, but you can find a good replacement and should be just fine. The biggest issue that people seemed to raise was that it wasn’t always easy to start, sometimes taking two or three more pills than most machines would require. Other than that, there isn’t very much not to like here. It gives good power and isn’t absurdly loud either.

The Verdict

This is a good product for the money, and I struggle to find a reason why the Sun Seeker brush cutter shouldn’t be purchased. Yes, the issues with starting taking 5 to 6 pulls is frustrating, but not much else jumps out at me. Overall, I like the power that it puts out, and I love how sturdy the frame is.

Best Value: Remington RM2700

Remington RM2700 Ranchero 27cc 18-Inch Gas Powered Brushcutter and String Trimmer 2-Cycle-Lightweight-Attachment Capable-Straight Shaft

What is the best brush cutter for the money?  During our search for the best brush trimmer, the model RM2700 from Remington stood out as one of the few lower-cost tools that still offered superb value. It’s designed to be light and ultra-easy to maneuver and I have to say, they succeeded in every way possible. The ability to add attachments easily also makes it very versatile.

The Good

  • Lightweight – Very easy to handle
  • 27 cc 2-cycle Powerful engine
  • Accepts several attachments (sold separately) allowing you to consolidate a fair amount of lawn equipment into one easy to use tool
  • Comes with an attachable string trimmer bump head
  • Requires little effort to start thanks to the embedded quick start technology

*Interchanging the accessories can be a little difficult and time-consuming

Nearly everyone using the Remington RM2700 marveled at just how light it is, while still remaining very powerful. Many reviews compare the power to Echo & Stihl brands. It may be that this product is just balanced really well, as at 14 lbs it isn’t the lightest – it falls right in the middleweight of models we tested. Either way, it feels like lighter weight brush cutter, and in fact, I’m sure I’ve used “weed eaters” that are much heavier than this brush cutter. If you need something manageable, you definitely need to look at this one.

The Verdict

You’re looking for a brush cutter on a budget, however, you still want value from your purchase. If not you’re throwing money away. I think it’s safe to say that the Remington RM2700 provides plenty of value. It’s lightweight and has very sufficient power. Sure, you may not be able to cut down the thickest of shrubs with it, but it is certainly a viable option for residential use.

Best “High- Wheeled” Brush Cutter Lawn Trimmer: Remington RM1159

Remington RM1159 Walk-Behind High-Wheeled String Trimmer

This is a fantastic Brush Cutter option as you may not be able or willing, to wield a heavy brush cutter around the yard. Even though hand-held Brush Cutters have straps and two handles typically, the weight of these machines can make them difficult or just a nuisance to operate for some folks, and we think the Remington High Wheeled 22” Brush Cutter solves that problem in a big way. Editor’s Note: This machine while amazing at clearing Heavy grass and weeds, is not capable of trimming small trees. It doesn’t have a “Steel Blade” attachment. This model is designed to be used as a Lawn Mower for Heavy Grass or Weeds, but because most Brush clearing involves tall weeds or grass, then you may have found a great alternative to Hand-Held brush cutter machines!

FAQ:   Why use “Brush Cutters vs. Traditional String Trimmers”

At first glance, there may not seem to be much of a difference between traditional weed whackers and brush cutters. We assure you, they are very different from each other. For starters, weed eaters can’t take on nearly as many obstacles as a brush cutter can. Weed eaters are for weeds; brush cutters are for the brush, and Brush Cutters most often utilize a Steel Blade vs. String to cut down heavy brush.

1) Weed Eater/String Trimmer

Weed Eaters or sometimes referred to as String Trimmers are hand-held (sometimes walk-behind) units that can help you trim down grassy areas that your lawn mower may not be able to get to. We’re talking, side of the house, by trees, around flower beds. They typically they use nylon strings to cut down the weeds, although some models allow you to switch to a blade, for more areas with more formidable weeds, they are still only useful for only small to medium grasses.

2) Brush Cutter

A brush cutter is pretty much what the name implies, they are meant for cutting down large weeds, shrubs, and well… brush. These machines are customarily much heavier than string trimmers (thankfully they usually come with a harness and 2 handles to help you carry the weight a little easier), and subsequently pack a whole lot more power. If you’ve got heavy weeds to chop down, then the brush cutter is the tool for you.

3) Power Options

Like with any other piece of lawn equipment, you have more than one option to choose from when it comes to powering your brush cutter. There’s the tried and true gas-powered motors, and the newer, electric powered motors. Which one is best, depends entirely on your situation and needs.

4) Electric Powered

If you’re looking for a lightweight (relatively speaking of course) brush cutter, then electric is the way to go. Naturally, there are two subcategories of electrically powered tools, and it’s no different here; you can choose battery-powered, or you can opt for being tethered to an outlet, just remember, you’ll have to supply the extension cord. Whereas, battery-powered versions come with a battery and charger.

The downside here is that electric powered cutters are less powerful, and they also don’t run quite as long as their gas-powered counterparts.

5) Gas Powered

Gas Powered Brush Cutters and Trimmers are by far the most popular of their type. They are more powerful, run longer, last longer, and there are more options to select from. Gas-powered cutters can cut through just about anything even small saplings, so if you’re going for power, you’ll want a brush cutter that runs on gasoline.

The main difference in gas-powered models is the type of engine it utilizes; 2 strokes or 4 strokes. A 2 stroke engine will be slightly smaller and significantly lighter, but it won’t be nearly as strong as a four-stroke engine. On the flip side, a four-stroke engine requires a lot more moving parts, meaning it requires more maintenance, and they will be a lot more expensive than a two-stroke. If you’re using your brush cutter for residential purposes, we suggest you stick to the Two-Stroke models. They pack plenty of power, and best of all, it doesn’t cost a months mortgage.

6) High wheeled Push Trimmer vs. Hand-Held Brush Cutter

Wrap – Up

We love our lawns; it’s where we barbecue; where our friends hang out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon; sip a favorite beverage and argue football, it’s where our children play. So it’s no wonder we take so much pride in keeping our yards pristine.
Sometimes we need a little help, and sometimes brush and shrub can take hold and overrun our yards. It’s good to know that when that time comes, brush cutters are there to help us fend off these invasive yard grabbers.
