Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which are better; Battery or Gas-Powered Lawn Tools?

Moving towards battery-powered vs. gas-leaf tools is a popular direction for most homeowners. Just think of it; Cordless tools are 100% portable and allow you to go anywhere without the fumes, tune-ups, or gas/oil mix required by gas-powered tools.

Need to use a battery-powered hedge trimmer to trim a 100 feet hedge?  No problem, Cordless blowers are unlimited as long as the battery is charged.

Our biggest recommendation is – Keep an extra battery on hand – fully charged. That way, when your battery gets low, you can keep going.

Cordless surround sound systems, phones, wireless controllers for video games, we’ve even removed the cords from most of our headphones. So wouldn’t it stand to reason we would want our lawn tools cordless?

If you still need some convincing, I’ll help – after 8 years of use – cordless is the way to go!

What Is The Best Cordless Leaf Blower To Buy?

If you’re looking for a combination of the most powerful cordless leaf blower on the market, the EGO Power + takes that honor.  At 530 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) – The EGO Power+ is a beast!

At 75-minute run-time, the EGO blower also tops our list for that category.

However, suppose you’re looking for a powerful cordless leaf blower with the longest-running battery that goes to DeWalt, with their 20 Volt – 5.0 Ah Lithium-Ion battery. In that case, DeWalt also has another decided advantage.

If you own other DeWalt cordless tools – you can easily interchange the leaf blower battery with any of their 20-volt power tools.

What is the Best Leaf Blower for a Small Budget?

The Black + Decker or Ryobi Leaf Blower are the best choices for homeowners on a tighter budget.

Do Leaf Blowers Work on Pine Needles?

Because pine needles are “acidic” and can also be a deterrent for healthy grass, you want to keep pine needles well managed and away from your lawn. In our leaf blower reviews, even The Greenworks leaf blower – The least powerful of our recommended leaf blowers, delivers up to 110 mph of airspeed.

Which is more than sufficient to blow pine needles.  Of course, depending on your budget, if you have many pine trees encroaching on your landscape, you may want to consider the more powerful EGO or WORX leaf blower models.

Which are Better, 40-volt or 20-volt battery-powered tools?

As clearly explained by Remington Power Tools – The Voltage in battery-powered tools refers to the amount of “Power” the battery can deliver. 40V batteries contain twice the power of 20-volt batteries.

However, just as important to look at is Battery Ah (Amp Hours), which determines the “Storage Capacity” of a battery. For instance, a 5.0 Ah battery will store energy (and run longer) than a 2.0 Ah battery.

In any case, we only recommend purchasing Lithium-Ion battery-powered equipment.  Lithium-Ion batteries are far superior to earlier battery types used for power tools and are included in all the only means we recommend above.

Advantages of Battery-Powered vs. Gas-Powered Equipment:

1) Freedom of Movement

Who likes being tethered to the wall or anything else? I sure don’t, and I’d venture to guess you don’t either. This rings especially true when trying to get your yard work done.

Worrying about where you will plug in the cord or how much slack you have left in the cord is for the birds. Not to mention how often the cord will get lost under the pile of leaves you meticulously put together.

Of course, a cordless blower completely removes all that additional work.

2) No Fuel Required

It’s true; gas leaf blowers are cordless too. Except for the pull cord, you must yank it every time you need to start the machine. But unlike gas blowers, cordless leaf blowers require zero fuel. Not only are you not having to pay for gas, but you also don’t have to make extra trips to the station.

3) Quieter Operation

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a quiet cordless leaf blower, but because of an inherently smaller HP rating, most cordless blowers are more peaceful than gas blowers. What this means for you is not having to scream over the sound of the two-stroke or four-stroke motors and not affecting neighbors’ peace as much.

4) Lightweight

While not being considered weightless, at 4-7 lbs. Cordless leaf blowers are Infinity lighter than their 2-stroke and 4-stroke gas counterparts. By a long shot, try 17 lbs. on average for a gas blower.

Much heavier for the gas blower backpack versions.  Personally, yard work can be a lot of – work – and lighter, cordless blowers or string trimmers can make a massive difference at the end of your workday.

5) No Harmful Fumes

We often take easy breathing for granted until we live with the exhaust fumes from gas blowers.  You can wear a mask. However, that probably isn’t your first choice on a hot day.

Because they don’t release emissions, exhaust fumes are not an issue with battery-operated leaf blowers. Along the way, we can even help clean up the environment a little as well.

History Lesson – Who Invented The Leaf Blower?

According to Wikipedia, the first version, “leaf blower,” dates back to 1947. However, the leaf blower as we know it today was initially designed as more of a backpack fogger apparatus.

The Japanese-based Kyoritsu Noki Company initially invented the machine. Kyoritsu later followed that design with a gas-powered backpack/blower/misting machine in 1955.

Later, in 1968, Kyoritsu applied for a patent on a backpack blower and then, in 1972, set up shop in the United States as the “Kioritz Corporation of America.”

It is widely credited to Kioritz Corporation as having invented the first official Leaf Blower in 1977. The company changed its name to the now-familiar “Echo” Equipment in 1978.

In the late 1970s, rival manufacturers like Stihl, Husqvarna, and Echo saw the sales of gas-powered leaf blowers worldwide explode. By 1989, It is estimated that the sale of leaf blowers in the U.S. had exceeded 1 million units.

“Leaf Blower Opposition”

While the invention of leaf blowers created a buzz amongst commercial and residential homeowners, environmental groups were not as impressed. Namely due to the only available power source derived for the leaf blower – the combustion engine.

Besides producing known “air pollutants,” gas-powered leaf blowers were also rightly identified as a significant source of “noise pollution.” Some national and prominent publishers, such as the New York Times, even featured articles “on banning leaf blowers.”

Finding a “Quieter Leaf Blower Solution”

To meet the 1995 California noise and air pollution regulations, leaf blower manufacturers modified the current engine designs to comply; however, 1999 regulations were far more stringent, forcing the engineering of a quieter, more compliant 2-stroke gas engine design.

While leaf blowers were becoming more tolerable in U.S. suburban neighborhoods, many communities had banned their use. To answer those complaints by the mid-2,000, manufacturers again created a further evolution of the leaf blower.

Using the increasingly popular NICad (nickel-cadmium) battery-powered tool format, they began to produce a battery-powered leaf blower.

The new NiCad battery-powered leaf blower designs were further improved in 2009 through a more powerful, longer, running lithium-ion battery, which now powers most cordless leaf blowers marketed today.

Cordless leaf blowers today operate with no emissions and an estimated 70% reduction in noise levels produced by their gas-powered predecessors.

Are you looking for a Battery-Powered Leaf Blower and String-Trimmer Combo? The best manufacturers produce these handy cordless tools and combine both devices at affordable prices.

And each tool includes Interchangeable batteries that power both pieces of equipment!

Conclusion

There is nothing like having an immaculate lawn. It makes barbecuing better; it improves sitting on the patio and gives your home an overall sense of finished outdoor space.

Having a great lawn requires keeping the leaves (or anything else) from cluttering the yard, and the best way to do that is with a battery-operated cordless leaf blower.

If you have the budget for it and want to enter into the best battery-powered tool line-up, we recommend the EGO leaf blower

However, if you’re looking to save some money and want to equip your home with more affordable product lines, the WORX, Greenworks, and Black & Decker are less expensive and proven pieces of cordless equipment.
