Today we’re going to look at the best electric snow blowers for 2019, along with the specifications and in-depth review for each model:

Let’s kick it off with the “Editor’s Choice” – Cordless Snowblower from “Snow Joe”:

Editor’s Choice: Snow Joe iON18SB – Cordless Single-Stage Snowblower

Snow Joe iON18SB 18-Inch 40 Volt Cordless Brushless Single Stage Snow Blower, Kit (w/4.0-Ah Battery + Quick Charger)

Why We Like It

Landing at #1 in our review, as the best battery-powered snowblower is the Snow Joe 40V iON18SB snowblower. A heavy-duty, battery-powered snowblower that offers great power in a lightweight package.

Oh, and the “Price”.  At the time of publishing this review, Snow Joe just today lowered it to $70 off the normal price of $299 for this amazing machine! The Snow Joe 40 Volt could double as our Editor’s choice and Best Value Pick.

The Snow Joe snow blower is perfect for light to medium use around the house, is easy to maneuver, and will help you avoid the need to buy a large, heavier weight, gas-powered snowblower.

Specs

  • Tested to move 500 pounds of snow a minute
  • 18 inches wide
  • 40-volt lithium-ion battery power
  • LED headlight

Our Takeaway – On the Snow Joe 40 Volt Snowblower:

Overall, we find the Snow Joe 40 Volt to be an excellent machine for home-usage. Our only complaint would be the 18″ width being a little small, but that could also be considered a strength – it’s lighter and easier to move from the driveway to the walk, or deck!

Even with heavy snow, you’ll still have plenty of power on tap to make quick work of walkways and driveways. Its lightweight is also a significant advantage since it can be easily turned and maneuvered as needed.

Runner Up: Greenworks 2600402 – Pro 80V 20” Snowblower

GreenWorks 2600402 Pro 80V 20-Inch Cordless Snow Thrower, 2Ah Battery & Charger Included

Why We Like It

In terms of sheer power, there are very few electric snow blower cordless options that can beat this offering from Greenworks. We’re always suckers for the next level of power in battery technology, so this snowblower naturally appeals to us. The 80-volt battery that comes with this snow blower can also be used in any other 80 Volt Greenworks power tool, which is a huge convenience factor.

Specs

  • 80-volt lithium-ion battery power
  • 20-inch width
  • LED headlight
  • Up to 45 minutes of runtime

Our Takeaway

In general, we’re very impressed with this snowblower. With its superior ability to move snow, it’s an excellent option for people looking for the best electric snow blower for heavier work and larger driveways.

While you pay a premium for this kind of power, the Greenworks 80-Volt snowblower delivers, and it’s worth it, if you live in an area prone to heavy snowfalls.

Best Value: Earthwise 40-volt Snow Blower

Earthwise SN74018 Cordless Electric 40-Volt 4Ah Brushless Motor, 18-Inch Snow Thrower, 500lbs/Minute, With LED spotlight (Battery and Charger Included)

Why We Like It

In terms of bang for your buck, it’s hard to beat this cordless snow blower from Earthwise. With a 40-volt battery and large rear wheels, this snow blower can take on significant snowfalls without too much difficulty while giving you the maneuverability and ease-of-use you need.

Specs

  • 40-volt lithium-ion battery power
  • 18 inches wide
  • Moves up to 500 pounds of snow per minute
  • Throws up to 30 feet
  • Easy assembly

Our Takeaway

If you’re looking to clear out smaller driveways, walks, and patios, at an affordable price, the Earthwise 40V could be the snowblower for you. At only 32 Lbs. this model is particularly suitable for homeowners who have trouble using heavier equipment. On the whole, we’re very pleased with the features, quality, and overall capabilities packed into this lighter weight snowblower.

Best Upgrade: Snow Joe 80V – Cordless “2-Stage” Snow Blower

Snow Joe iON8024-XR 80-Volt iONMAX Cordless Two Stage Snow Blower Kit | 24-Inch | 4-Speed | Headlights | W/ 2 x 5.0-Ah Batteries and Charger

Why We Like It

Next on our rundown of the best cordless snow blower 2019 is this 24-inch upgrade model from Snow Joe. As most folks know, a 2-Stage snowblower is the “next level” when it comes to efficiently move snow, and that’s exactly what this snowblower offers.

With more power and greater capabilities than the 18-inch model we selected for our Editor’s Choice, this Snow Joe machine definitely delivers on performance.

80-volt batteries provide the power, while a self-propulsion system makes it simpler to move and use this amazing cordless snow blower.

Specs

  • 80-volt lithium-ion battery power
  • 24 inches wide
  • Two LED headlights
  • 4-speed settings
  • Moves up to 1,000 pounds of snow per minute

Our Takeaway

While reviewing each of the best rated cordless snow blower options for 2019, this one definitely caught our eye. The 80-volt batteries that come with this model hold their charge well, allowing for prolonged use on larger areas. Being a self-propelled model is also a significant point in this unit’s favor since most electric snow blowers simply require the user to push.

Our only reservation for not naming the Snow Joe 80v snowblower as our Editor’s choice is due to the significantly higher entry price. That said, if you can afford a 2-stage cordless snow blower, this is the one to buy.

Best Electric “Corded” Option: Snow Joe SJ623E

Snow Joe SJ623E 18-Inch 15 Amp Electric Single Stage Snow Thrower

Why We Like It

As you’ve noticed, our review today features the best “cordless” snow blowers for 2019.

However, we couldn’t pass up the chance to recommend the Snow Joe SJ623E electric snowblower (corded) due to its outstanding features, performance, and stellar reviews.

Electric corded options like this provide a bit more power than most battery models and are more suitable for tasks that will take an hour or more to perform.

So, while it may not necessarily fit the theme (cordless) of this review, here it is anyway!

Specs

  • 15-amp motor
  • LED headlights
  • 4-blade steel auger
  • 180-degree full-turn chute
  • Amazing ratings
Best Snow Blower | Best Home Gear
Best Electric “Corded” Snow Blower

Our Takeaway

This snow blower is capable of tackling snowfall up to one foot deep, even if they aren’t light and powdery. Although Snow Joe SJ623E corded snowblower delivers exceptional power for its size, it’s relatively light and effortless to use.

Because of these features, its an excellent alternative to gas snow blowers for tackling larger jobs.

One note about using a corded snowblower is, well, the “cord” itself. Some users complain that, while the snowblower is certainly powerful enough, dragging an extension cord in the middle of winter, can be a bit cumbersome. Factor in that consideration, based on the size of your property or areas you intend to use a snowblower for. If you have a small to medium size driveway and walks – this could be the most dependable and efficient snow blower for you.

Best Cordless Electric Snow Shovel – Earthwise 40V – 16” wide

Earthwise SN74016 40-Volt Cordless Electric Snow Shovel, Brushless Motor, 16-Inch width, 300lbs/Minute (Battery and Charger Included)

Why We Like it

While today’s review focuses on cordless Snowblowers, many folks choose to maintain and use their gas-powered snowblower for heavier, wetter snowfalls, and instead use portable, ready to go cordless “Snow Shovels”, for their porch, deck, or sidewalks.

If you’re not familiar with this handy tool, the battery-powered snow shovel is one of those “can’t believe I didn’t buy one earlier” power tools.

At only 19 lbs., you can easily grab this tool and go after snow with its 16” wide x 8” deep clearing path. It runs a powerful 40V battery system capable of run times up to 30 minutes and can launch snow up to 30 feet.

Specs

  • 40 Volt Battery system (battery and charger included)
  • 16” Wide x 8” Deep cutting path
  • The manufacturer rates this model to move 300 ft. of snow per minute
  • Dual Auger Blade
  • Adjustable Snow Throwing Direction
  • 6” Wheels

Our Takeaway

While the Earthwise 16″ snow shovel may not be the “end all” for moving very heavy snow in large driveways, but it does offer a very convenient option to move snow. That is, the convenience and lightweight portability to carry your snow thrower from the sidewalk to the porch, or to your deck, easily and safely.

If that wasn’t enough, the Earthwise 40 Volt snow shovel does so without the possibility of spilling Gas, fouled spark plugs, or dragging extension cords. Earthwise did provide a super practical choice with this model.

Best “Lightweight” Snow Shovel: Snow Joe 24V – Cordless Snow Shovel

Snow Joe iON13SS-HYB 40-Volt iONMAX Hybrid Brushless Snow Shovel Kit | 13-Inch | W/ 4.0-Ah Battery and Charger

Why We Like It

Another convenient snow throwing option we had to include on our best electric battery snowblower list is the highly-rated 10” snow shovel from Snow Joe.

At only 10 lbs., the Snow Joe 24 volt snow shovel is not only the lightest snow shovel we tested, but it also has plenty of power to get the job done. This, while being far lighter and easier to use than any traditional snowblower on the market.

This amazing little snow shovel will easily clear a 10” path, making it perfect for decks, sidewalks, or small driveways.

Specs

  • 24-volt – 4.0Ah lithium-ion battery
  • Two-Year Warranty
  • 10 Inch wide x 6-inch deep path
  • Push-button start
  • Throws snow up to 20 feet
  • Up to 24 minutes of battery runtime

Our Takeaway

While it won’t be suitable for huge driveways or heavy wet snowfall, this electric snow shovel offered more than enough to impress us.

And while it may take longer to clear snow with its 10″ wide path, users rate the Snow Joe snow shovel as extremely reliable to get small jobs done efficiently.

We recommend this unit as a great option for elderly homeowners and those who may struggle with some back problems. At only 10 lbs. the powerful Snow Joe snow shovel can be a suitable choice over the heavier battery-powered snow removal options on the market.

Best Hybrid Snow Shovel: Snow Joe 40V Hybrid Snow Shovel

Snow Joe iON13SS-HYB 40-Volt iONMAX Hybrid Brushless Snow Shovel Kit | 13-Inch | W/ 4.0-Ah Battery and Charger

Why We Like It

This model is very similar to the one listed above, except for the fact that it can be run either on a 40-volt battery or an electrical extension cord. This gives it more versatility and the ability to be used for as long as needed and for longer operating capability. If you’re looking for a tough little snowblower, for larger snowfalls, this is likely the option for you.

Specs

  • 40-volt lithium-ion battery or corded electric power
  • 13 inches wide
  • Push-button start
  • Throws snow up to 25 feet
  • Up to 52 minutes of runtime on battery

Our Takeaway

The Snow Joe “Hybrid” snow shovel gets two thumbs up for all of the same reasons that we liked the battery-only version, plus one. Quality, reliability, and performance are still major strong suits of this model, and its versatility to be able to use an electrical cord is just another bonus for homeowners to consider this model.

Frequently Asked Questions

In our FAQ section, you’ll find the answers to a few common questions buyers are asking, before making an informed buying decision.

What Is the Difference Between Gas and Electric Snow Blowers?

The primary functional difference between the two is the power source. Gas-powered snow blowers typically offer more horsepower than electric models do, providing an edge for very heavy or wet snowfall.

With that said, gas-powered models are also heavier and therefore harder to handle and require much more routine maintenance than their electric counterparts.

For this reason, we think that a cordless snow blower is a viable option for many homeowners to consider.

What Do the Voltage Ratings Mean?

In battery-operated power equipment, “Voltage” can be viewed as a rating for “Power”. At its face, a 56-volt battery, for example, will provide more power than a 40-volt; however, there is a bit more consideration when choosing a battery-powered tool system.

When considering “voltage” in terms of Power – the performance of a 40-volt vs. a 56-volt system, for instance, should not be the sole factor for determining the “available power” a battery can provide.

Amp Hour x Volts = Watt Hour

Overall, “power” when measuring battery equipment, is Actually measured in both;

Amp-hours (Ah) and Battery Voltage (volts).

These two factors together determine the available “Watt Hours” of any particular battery system.

For example, a 4 Ah lithium-ion battery will provide (stored) power – twice as long as a 2 Ah lithium-ion battery.

So a 40-volt – 4 Ah battery will actually produce about the same Watt-Hours as an 80-volt – 2 Ah battery.

Therefore, It’s more practical to compare overall Lithium-ion Battery Power – in terms of its “Watt Hours” over any other measurement.

Watt-hours are always listed on the battery label itself, but may not be listed in the specs or on the box.

Our suggestion: Read the battery label on the models your looking at, and use the Watt-Hours to compare one power tool vs. another. It’s more reliable, quicker, and the formula is already done!

Are Electric Snow Blowers Any Good?

At one time, electric power equipment got a bad reputation for being too weak to tackle anything but very light jobs. However, that stopped being the case quite some time ago.

Today, cordless electric tools are much more powerful and reliable than when they were first introduced.

Based on the overall user ratings we studied, the best cordless snow blowers available on the market, do meet the needs of most homeowners.

This is especially true for those with smaller driveways, decks, or walks to manage.  Ever tried a cordless leaf blower to remove a light snowfall?  Don’t laugh – It really works!

Who Makes the Best Electric “Snow Shovel”?

In our opinion and for the money, we think the best electric snow thrower is the Snow Joe 24 Volt cordless model, listed as our Editor’s Choice. Combining excellent power and features with good value, we think that this snow blower represents the best choice for the most significant number of homeowners.

If the weight of a larger snow blower is an issue for you as a user, you should consider our choice for the best cordless snow shovel, the Snow Joe 24 volt. It’s quick, convenient, and capable of throwing snow up to 20 feet with a powerful 24 volt – 4.0 Ah lithium-ion battery.

Snowblower Safety Precautions

Anytime you use power tools, it’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with the equipment you’re about to use. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, and thoroughly before using – including battery charging instructions.

For proper snow blowing safety, we recommend using sturdy boots with good tread, thick gloves, and while not as critical for the quieter – cordless snowblowers; suitable hearing protection.

Refrain from wearing any loose clothing; such as long scarfs that could get tangled, in an auger.

Make sure to never put hands, feet, or face, anywhere near an auger or snowblower chute while it is running.

Snowblowers are powerful pieces of equipment, capable of throwing stones or loose gravel up to 50 feet. When using a snowblower never aim the chute towards people, homes, windows, cars, etc. as this could do serious damage.

Snowblowers should be used by adults or only with adult supervision, and are not recommended for children’s use.

If you experience a blockage in the auger or chute, turn the snow blower off.  Then using a stick or broom handle, gently prod snow and ice loose.  Never use your hands to remove objects.
