A cordless snow blower is a snowblower with a push-button start that operates on battery power without an electrical cord.  For this reason, cordless snow blowers are also called Battery-Powered Snow Blowers.  Not to be confused with a Gas-powered or Electrical Corded snow blower, a Cordless Snow Blower gets all of its power from High Amp, Lithium-Ion batteries. Cordless snowblower Batteries range from 4.0-6.0 Amp-hours and 20-80 Volt power and are fully rechargeable

Best 40 Volt Buy:   Snow Joe iON18SB – 40 Volt Cordless Snowblower

Snow Joe ION18SB 18-Inch 40 Volt Cordless Single Stage Brushless Snow Blower, 7' x 1.5'

Why We Like It

Based on our research and for those looking for a combination of reliability and affordability, we named the Snow Joe 40V iON18SB Snow Blower our Best Value in a battery-powered snowblower.

With a heavy-duty, 40 Volt Lithium-Ion battery powered by a “brushless motor,” * The ION18SB Snow Blower offers a lot of power in a lightweight package.

*Brushless Motors typically last 2.5-3 times longer than non-brushed motors.

Depending on sale prices, The 40 Volt Cordless (battery) Snow Joe Snowblower is equal to, or slightly less expensive than, our Editors Choice – the Greenworks Snowblower, and a whopping $300 less than the Premium brand EGO snowblower.

We’re like you, we would prefer to be sitting around a fire pit table instead of blowing snow, But if you need to brave the cold, we think this snow blower from Snow Joe is the ideal choice for light to medium snowfall at any house.

How to use a Snow Blower – Video From Snow Joe:

Our Takeaway – For the Snow Joe 40 Volt Snowblower:

Overall, the Snow Joe 40 Volt is an excellent machine for home or light commercial use. Our only complaint would be the 18″ width is a little smaller, compared to EGO’s 21″ or Greenworks 20″ path, but that could also be considered a strength – as the Snow Joe ion model is a little easier to maneuver from the driveway to the walk, and deck.

Even with heavy snow, you’ll still have plenty of power on tap to make quick work of walkways and driveways.  Its lightweight is also a significant advantage since it can be easily turned and maneuvered as needed.

The real draw in buying this particular Snow Joe snow blower is the “Brushless” Motor, which can last up to 3 times longer than a traditional battery-powered motor. This type of battery guards against a start and stop-to-charge process of snow blowing.

You get a dependable, highly rated, 40-Volt battery-powered snow blower at an outstanding price.

Best Upgrade: Snow Joe 80V – “Two-Stage” 24″ Snow Blower

Snow Joe ION8024-XR iON Series Snow Blower, Black

Why We Like It

Next on our rundown of the best battery snow blowers is this 24-inch wide model from Snow Joe. As most folks know, a 2-Stage snowblower is the “next level” when efficiently moving snow, and that’s exactly what this snowblower offers.

With more power and greater capabilities than the 18-inch model we selected for our Editor’s Choice, this Snow Joe machine delivers on performance and is far easier to push.

80-volt batteries provide the power, while a self-propulsion system makes it simpler to move and use this amazing cordless snow blower.

Specs

  • 80-volt lithium-ion battery power
  • 24 inches wide
  • Two LED headlights
  • 4-speed settings
  • Moves up to 1,000 pounds of snow per minute

Our Takeaway

While reviewing each of the best-rated cordless snow blower options for 2019, this one caught our eye. The 80-volt batteries provided with this model hold their charge very well, allowing for prolonged use in larger areas.

Being a self-propelled model is also a significant point in this unit’s favor since most electric snow blowers require the user to push.

Our only reservation for not naming the Snow Joe 80v snowblower as our Editor’s choice is due to the significantly higher entry price. That said, if you can afford a 2-stage cordless snow blower, this is the one to buy.

Best Electric (Corded) Snowblower – Snow Joe SJ623E

Snow Joe SJ623E 18-Inch 15-Amp Electric Single Stage Snow Thrower w/Headlights, Blue Clearing Width, Motor

Why We Like It

As you’ve noticed, our review today features the best “cordless” snow blowers.

However, we couldn’t pass up the chance to recommend the Snow Joe SJ623E electric snowblower (corded) due to its outstanding features, performance, and stellar consumer ratings.

While the distance of an extension cord restricts the use of an “electric corded” snowblower, true electric snowblowers like this model from Snow Joe provide more power than most battery (cordless) models and are more suitable for properties that take an hour or more to clear.

So, while it may not necessarily fit this snowblower into a “cordless blower review”, here it is anyway:)

Specs

  • Powerful 15-amp motor
  • LED headlights
  • 4-blade Steel Auger
  • 180-degree full-turn chute
  • Amazing Customer Ratings
Best Snow Blower | Best Home Gear
Best Electric “Corded” Snow Blower
Our Takeaway

This snow blower can tackle snowfall up to one foot deep, even if they aren’t light and powdery. Although Snow Joe SJ623E corded snowblower delivers exceptional power for its size, it’s relatively light and effortless.

Because of these features, it’s an excellent alternative to gas snow blowers for tackling larger jobs.

One note about using a corded snowblower is the “cord” itself. Some users complain that the snowblower is powerful enough, but dragging an extension cord in winter can be cumbersome.

Factor in that consideration based on the size of your property or areas you intend to use a snowblower. However, If you have a medium to large driveway and sidewalks, this could be your most dependable and efficient snow blower.

Why We Like It

This model is very similar to the one listed above, except that it can be run on a 40-volt battery or an electrical extension cord. This gives it more versatility and the ability to be used for as long as needed and for longer operating capability. Frequently Asked Questions

In this FAQ section, you’ll find the answers to a few of the most common questions buyers are asked before making an informed buying decision.

What Is the Difference Between Gas and Electric Snow Blowers?

The primary difference between gas and cordless snowblowers is the power they deliver. Gas-powered snow blowers typically offer more horsepower than electric models, providing more power for heavy or wet snowfall.

With that said, gas-powered models are also heavier, harder to handle, and require more routine maintenance than an electric snowblower.

For this reason, we think a cordless snow blower is a great option for many homeowners.

What Do the Voltage Ratings Mean?

In battery-operated power equipment, “Voltage” can be viewed as a rating for “Power”. On its face, a 56-volt battery, for example, will provide more power than a 40-volt; however, there is a bit more consideration when choosing a battery-powered tool system.

When considering “voltage” in terms of Power – the performance of a 40-volt vs. a 56-volt system, for instance, should not be the sole factor determining the “available power” a battery can provide.

Amp Hour x Volts = Watt Hours:  Overall, the “power” of a lithium-ion battery, when measuring its performance, is based on both measures.

These two factors together determine the available “Watt Hours” of any particular battery system.

For example, a 4 Ah lithium-ion battery will provide (stored) power – twice as long as a 2 Ah lithium-ion battery.

So a 40-volt – 4 Ah battery will produce about the same Watt-Hours as an 80-volt – 2 Ah battery – which = 160 Watt Hours.

For the consumers’ sake, It’s more practical to compare overall Lithium-ion Battery Power – in terms of its “Watt Hours” over any other measurement.

Watt-hours are always listed on the battery label but may not be listed in the specs or box.

Our suggestion: Read the battery label on the models you’re looking at, and use the Watt-Hours to compare one power tool vs. another. It’s more reliable and quicker, and the formula is already done!

Are Electric Snow Blowers Any Good?

At one time, electric power equipment got a bad reputation for being too weak to tackle anything but very light jobs. However, that stopped being the case quite some time ago.

Today, cordless electric tools are much more powerful and reliable than when they were first introduced.

Based on the overall user ratings we studied, the best cordless snow blowers on the market meet most homeowners’ needs.

This is especially true for those with smaller driveways, decks, or walks to manage.  Ever tried a cordless leaf blower to remove a light snowfall?  Don’t laugh – It works!

Who Makes the Best Electric “Snow Shovel”?

In our opinion and for the money, we think the best electric snow thrower is the Snow Joe 24 Volt cordless model, listed as our Editor’s Choice. Combining excellent power and features with good value, we think this snow blower represents the best choice for the most significant number of homeowners.

If the weight of a larger snow blower is an issue for you as a user, you should consider our choice for the best cordless snow shovel, the Snow Joe 24-volt. It’s quick, convenient, and capable of throwing snow up to 20 feet with a powerful 24-volt – 4.0 Ah lithium-ion battery.

Snowblower Safety Precautions

Anytime you use power tools, it’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with the equipment you’re about to use. Read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and thoroughly, including battery charging instructions.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates over 5,000 snowblower-related injuries a year in the United States require medical attention.

  • For proper snow-blowing safety, we recommend using sturdy boots with good tread and thick gloves, and while not as critical for the quieter – cordless snow blowers, suitable hearing protection.
  • In an auger, refrain from wearing loose clothing, such as long scarves that could get tangled.
  • Make sure never to put hands, feet, or face anywhere near an auger or snowblower chute while it is running.
  • Snowblowers are powerful equipment capable of throwing stones or loose gravel up to 50 feet. When using a snowblower, never aim the chute toward people, homes, windows, cars, etc., as this could do serious damage.
  • Snowblowers should be used by adults or only with adult supervision and are not recommended for children’s use.
  • Turn the snow blower off if you experience a blockage in the auger or chute.  Then using a stick or broom handle, gently prod snow and ice loose.  Never use your hands to remove objects from the auger.

Conclusion

Today we’ve covered the 6 Best Electric “Snowblowers” and the 2 Best Electric “Snow shovels” you can buy.  We trust with this review in hand and what you hope to accomplish at your property, you’ll more easily be able to select the right model for your needs.

We wholeheartedly recommend the Snow Joe 40 Volt – iON1SB snowblower for larger driveways and sidewalks.  You can’t go wrong with the Earthwise 40-volt or Snow Joe 24-volt electric snow shovels for smaller applications like decks, porches, and walks only.

  1. I have had the top-rated Greenworks snow blowers for four seasons now, and although it has enough power to push through the snow, the batteries NEVER last more than 1 season. At $200 for a new battery, that adds up quickly. Every single year for four years, I have had to replace the battery. They are always kept inside the house and placed on and off of the chargers at monthly intervals.

    • Hi Ben
Thanks for your recent comment regarding our Cordless Snow Blower Article

While I understand your frustration with Greenworks battery performance, I wonder if you originally purchased the snowblower or batteries outside an EGO-authorized dealer. Ace, Lowes, Northern Equipment, and Amazon (Ships from Amazon, not 3rd Party) are covered under Greenworks 4- year warranty on parts, including the batteries.

I have attached a Greenworks warranty link here for your consideration; https://www.greenworkstools.com/pages/warranty?_pos=1&_sid=46f9e4ecf&_ss=r

You are correct to keep the batteries inside the home and alternate them for use, especially during heavy snowfall.

If you ever wish to upgrade, I recommend the EGO ST2101 snowblower, which includes 56V power and (2) 4.0 Ah batteries with chargers. It’s a couple hundred more, but I have had nothing but success with mine.
Oh, and the warranty is 5-Years on the machine and 3-years on the Battery system.

Thanks again for reading our review and for your comments.
      Kevin
